We all know the world of bingo can be a romantic place and no more so than in Burton-on-Trent this week after Mecca Bingo employee Shauna Crawshaw had a very surprising day at work – where her boyfriend proposed in front of a packed hall of bingo lovers!
Yes, Shauna, who was celebrating her 19th birthday on the same day was stunned after her boyfriend, 21-year-old Daniel Clamp, proposed to her during her shift in front of around 100 bingo players, who were all
cheering on the lovestruck student.

Daniel’s big romantic gesture happened at the Middleway Park Mecca Bingo club in Burton and the 21-year-old student had got the all clear from Shauna’s boss before stopping the game of bingo and taking the microphone to ask Shauna to marry him. Of course she said yes! Daniel said: “I thought that proposing to her at work would be quite special.”
“I was shaking and really nervous on the night. I sat down with one of my friends and said to the manager that I needed five minutes before I asked.” he added.

Shauna, who is also studying on a beauty course at college, said: “My manager told me to come over and told the caller to stop the game because Dan had something to say to me. “Dan got up on the stage and said that he loved me and he wanted to marry me. “I was gobsmacked and I couldn’t stop shaking.” Of course, the bingo punters were thrilled about the lovestruck couple’s special moment and Daniel said they were all supportive with some of them even shouting ‘go on son!’

To celebrate their big news Daniel whisked Shauna away for a romantic evening including a delicious dinner – no doubt it’ll be a birthday to remember for Shauna. The young couple haven’t set a date yet but they say that it will

They were a regular feature in England for the following two and a half centuries finally coming to an end in 1826. They spread to America in the early seventeenth century and continued there until the beginning of the twentieth at which time they were banned and remained so until 1964.

The correlation between Bingo as we know it today and national lotteries is not at all clear, though if bingo did grow from these then the origins of the game must relate back to 205 BC rather than the generally stated sixteenth century AD, thus it is around 1,700 years older than is generally thought.
